"Now in its second season, I am delighted to be running the A&C Academy. Its goal is to identify talented players in our Junior section that have the potential to play national league rugby and create an environment for them to reach their full potential. For this club to sustain itself at our present level it is vital that we develop more home grown players and this programme will create a pathway to the first team for these players.
On an ongoing basis, I assess over 100 players from U15 to U17 for the Academy squad. As you can imagine this was not an easy process, but I have now selected a group of players that has the potential and the right attitude to play first team rugby for Chiltern in the future.
The Academy will meet fortnightly to train and focus on developing core skills. Players will also do extra training sessions in the holidays and on Sundays. However, none of these will interfere with their training/games within their age group, which I feel is very important. They will have just taken part in their first holiday training session this morning and will be watching the first team game today with you to get an idea of what they are aiming for.
Along with the extra training, the players have been given individual development programmes, involving conditioning, dietary plans and giving them every recourse available to reach their given goals. We will also have top coaches coming in for guest sessions throughout the year with the players.
This is an important move by the club and we are one of the very few clubs running a programme like this outside of the Championship. Obviously this is a long term plan but in the next two to three years we should see players coming out of our Colts ready to compete for a first team shirt.
I am looking forward to running the Academy over the coming years and helping to produce the A&C stars of the future."
