3xv finish the season in style & hit 50

For the last match of the season Chiltern 3xv hosted Wallingford 2xv who they travelled to on the first game of the season back in September 2013 winning 69-0.

The league title was secured the week before as Bletchley failed to beat Witney at home but Chiltern wanted a strong finish at home to sign off the season on a high

The first half didn't quite go to plan and Chiltern were frustrated against a Wallingford side who were tough to break down

It took 25 minutes for the first score, following on from a disallowed try in the corner for Liam Gilhooly for a forward pass. Chiltern had a lineout catch & drive and Luke Donnebaum went over for the first try of the day, the conversion was missed from out wide

Credit to Wallingford who came straight back at Chiltern and their centre crashed over under the posts, conversion successful. The score 5-7

Chiltern replied straight away; a great chase down by Paddy Esson the ball bounced up and he crossed over under the posts, the conversion successful by Phil John

Just before half time Chiltern had a penalty and Luke Donnebaum went over from 5 metres out to score, the conversion successful by Josh Davies

Chiltern were ahead but they certainly hadn't performed anything close to their potential

HT 19-7

An early penalty was missed by the impressive Wallingford no.12 keeping the score at 19-7

Harvey Gould was yellow carded putting Chiltern down to 14.

It was 10 minutes into the second half when Chiltern finally stepped up a gear; Josh Davies picked up the ball just inside the Wallingford half and turned on the pace to ghost past numerous defenders and score a wonderful try under the posts; he converted his own try

A yellow card for a Wallingford player allowed more space for Chiltern to attack and Luke Donnebaum scored his third of the day extending Chiltern's lead to 31-7, the conversion missed

Wallingford were resilient and they struck back with a try from their fly half who burst through the defence, the conversion was missed. The score now 31-12

It was the last 20 minutes when the fitness began to pay off and Chiltern added a further three tries.

Their sixth try of the day was arguably the best; Will Browne picked up the ball in his own half beating a couple of men to pass off to Johnny Rice who took a brilliant line into the Wallingford 22 and then passing off to Josh Davies (via Colm Gilhooly's lightning quick hands) who finished well, again converting his own try taking his personal tally for the season to 115 points.

The next try was scored by captain Luke Donnebaum and was his fourth of the game, a great personal achievement. The conversion was missed

The final try started with an outstanding tackle by Will Browne on the powerful Wallingford centre and this sparked an attack for Josh Davies to weave through and pass off to Michael Brothers to score under the posts, the score was now 48-12 and Chiltern needed the conversion to reach the half century. Johnny Rice stepped up and slotted the easiest of conversions bang in front of the posts to make it 50.

FT 50-12
