Big away win for Chiltern 2nd XV at Thatcham

Chiltern 2nd XV travelled to Thatcham with a strong starting 15 and were bolstered by the news that David Choules would play the role of super-sub, covering all positions from the bench. A&C started the match well with numerous good carries from both forwards and backs making good yards into the Thatcham half and 22. However, ill discipline at the breakdown meant Chiltern couldn't capitalise on these positions and Thatcham were able to clear well. A&C's breakthrough came when tighthead prop Garret Doman-Cann broke down the left wing just inside the Thatcham half and showed surprising pace and a strong hand-off to score the opening try for Chiltern. The try was then almost identically replicated by loosehead prop Ziana Alexis, only to be pulled down inches short, luckily hooker Patrick Esson was on hand to pick up and dot down for Chiltern's second try of the afternoon. Winger James McLoughlin was soon after unfortunate to be on the receiving end of a team yellow card after being adjudged to have come in from the side. Even with a man down A&C still dominated the set piece and game in general scoring two more tries before half-time and going in with a 20-0 lead.
In the second half Chiltern ran away with the game despite the continued best efforts of a brave Thatcham side. More strong running and excellent support play in particular from MOTM Joe Batt saw Chiltern score 12 tries in total including a hat-trick for Garret Doman-Cann, a brace each for Gareth Werhle and Dave Francis, and scores for Tony Machado, Mike Shaw, James McLoughlin and Michael Brothers. Brothers also kicked well all day and slotted some difficult conversions from close to the touchline. The second half also saw Jake Choules joined on the pitch by David Choules creating a dangerous father-son combination.
A&C 2nd XV now turn their attention to table topping Bracknell next week in what is sure to be a tough encounter, but with three wins in 2016 they will hope to continue their good form.
