A frustrating day of 'what ifs' for Chiltern who snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against a useful but hardly outstanding CS Rugby at Chiswick

Further enforced changes with captain Tom Grammenos having to pull out on Friday evening saw a decidedly makeshift pack struggle to gain a secure flow of ball to work with compounded by a regular failure to hang on to possession when in good attacking positions.

A good firm pitch but with a strong wind blowing straight down the field saw Chiltern lose the toss and be invited to play with the wind. In the end they didn’t score enough points with the wind advantage but more of that later. Early possession promised well and several penalties in Chiltern’s favour saw Jack Kenyon kick two for a 0-6 lead. The second of these saw the CS No.8 yellow carded. Poor control however again and again saw Chiltern concede ground and a good move by the CS backs saw an overlap unconverted try scored in the corner, 5-6. Back came Chiltern and in their best back play of the game Rhys Keith dived over for a good try, converted by Kenyon. No more scores left the game in the balance at 5-13 to Chiltern at half time.
Poor play by both sides was resulting in a scrappy game but it was CS who took advantage of another dropped ball by Chiltern to score a converted try shortly followed by a penalty which also saw Andy Zair yellow carded. Being behind for the first time seemed to wake Chiltern up and the forwards decided to concentrate on picking and driving against the strong wind. Moving up the field 'Truffles' (aka Tom Blackburn) and George Bartlett combined really well with the latter diving over for a try by the posts which Kenyon converted. Chiltern then increased their lead to 15-23 with another Kenyon penalty. At that stage Chiltern should have closed out the game but their failure to control the ball again let them down and another soft converted try and a stupid late penalty left the side with just a losing bonus point and wondering how they managed to let this one get away.
Their only amusement was the sight of the Chairman of Rugby wandering around the car park having locked his keys in the car!
A lot of things to work on in training this week before a return to Weedon Lane beckons against Guernsey on Saturday when the kick off will be 2.30pm in a must win game for Chiltern.
