After defeat to league leaders Lydney last week, Chiltern hosted top Cheltenham side Old Patesians determined to make amends.

The game was played with a strong, blustery wind blowing end to end and it was the hosts that had the first use of this and used it well from the kick-off, keeping the visitors pinned in their own half. Chiltern played with terrific speed and aggression and had the game all but won after 30 minutes having scored three great tries. The speed, power, deft handling and support play, particularly by Chiltern’s talented backs, overwhelmed their opposition who could find no answer although they never gave up trying.

Chiltern pressed from the kick-off and nearly scored a try immediately before Old Pats were forced to give away a penalty. Neatly converted by Matt Gilbert, Chiltern were 3 – 0 up after only 5 minutes. From the restart, a neat catch and drive from their 22 was carried on at huge pace. A break in the centre, pass out to winger, Steve Scopes saw him make a lot of ground before the pass inside to centre, David Skelton in support gave him the try, converted by Gilbert and the lead at 10-0. Again from the restart, a long kick gave Chiltern a line-out on the visitor’s 22. In what then appeared to be a practised move, the throw was safely taken and the ball slipped to man-of-the-match, prop Stuart Day, who blasted his way completely through the line-out and was unstoppable for the try. Conversion missed, the score was 15-0 to the hosts. On the half hour, a powerful drive through the centre by skipper, Tom Grammenos found flanker, Adam Henderson in support and another try under the posts. This was converted to move the score on to 22-0. A further penalty soon after meant that the half time score was 25-0 to the hosts.

Chiltern attacked from the restart and the ball was moved through many phases with ground continually being made. Blayne Underwood made good ground on the right wing before passing inside. The forwards drove on through the centre, the ball was quickly recycled and whisked along the line at pace for left wing Tim Lloyd to score the bonus point try in the corner. The conversion was missed, so the score remained at 30-0.
Long stoppages for injuries, a squally shower making handling difficult and players being sin-binned on both sides disrupted flowing play for the rest of the half. With the game all but won Chiltern emptied their bench, which slightly seemed to give the visitors an edge in the scrum. The strong blustery wind now in their faces, the home side concentrated on keeping a clean sheet and some tremendous defence denied the never-say-die visitors any score. The final whistle was blown with the score a resounding win for the hosts, 30-0.
