On a blustery, chilly winter's day, Chiltern made hard work of this victory against Harrow, never getting into top gear.

Match report by Spike Stevens

The first 10 minutes of the match set the tone for the whole 80, with numerous scrums being re-set before both Chiltern loosehead Alex Harland and his opposite number were yellow carded to allow replacements to try and provide a solid set scrum platform.

Chiltern opened the scoring with a pushover try after 15 minutes by No8 Jordan Scott, which went unconverted. The crowd had to wait 20 minutes for another score, then two came within 2 minutes. From spilt Harrow ball in midfield, fly half Joe Butler switched the point of attack in an instant and fed full back George Wood who dotted down under the posts for a try, converted by Andy Fluker. Jordan Scott then scored his second just before half time after intelligent hands from hooker Zane Turner created space on the blindside and Chiltern turned round 17-0 ahead at the break.

With the second half barely a minute underway, full back George Wood suffered a horrid leg injury and was replaced by Ollie Choules at fly half. He made an instant impact taking two tacklers with him over the line after a sharp break in the visitors 22, and Andy Fluker added the extras.

On 52 minutes Harrow responded with a try from a rolling maul, converted from the touchline. On 57 minutes Ollie Choules broke the blindside defence to romp in for his second try of the afternoon.

Harrow responded once more with another converted try after a chip ahead and kindly bounced flat footed the Chiltern covering defence.

This seemed to sting the home side into a more purposeful and fluent display, with tighthead prop Garret Doman-Cann, returning after a long injury lay-off to the First XV, and flanker Tom Handford both carrying deep into opposition territory. A beautiful cross field kick from Joe Butler sat up for debutant winger James McLoughlin to score in the corner.

With 4 minutes to go, centre Aaron Doyle sprinted in after being unselfishly fed by flanker Tom Blackburn who broke through the visitors defence with a great side-step for the try of the match.

On Thursday evening, Amersham & Chiltern plays Marlow away under lights for the re-scheduled senior Bucks Cup Final - the Alan Grimsdell Cup.

Then, a 6 Nations weekend off before we return to league action away at second placed Tring on 13 February for what promises to be the biggest test of our season - both sides will be desperate to win.
If Tring secure a bonus point win, they will leapfrog Chiltern to the top the table.
• If Chiltern win, we can put some daylight between us and the chasing pack.
It won’t be a game for the faint-hearted.
