Match report by Peter Osborne
Resolute defence and a perfect 8 from 8 kicking performance by Andy Fluker saw the visitors home, although a rare missed bonus point has closed the gap at the top to four points with some tough games ahead - notably on 13 February away to Tring, who are chasing Chiltern hard in second place.
After an early exchange of penalties Chiltern began to control and dominate possession and typical fast hands in midfield led to Jordan Scott dotting down under the posts. Another penalty converted by Andy Fluker opened up a 3-13 lead midway through the first half before a CS catch and drive from the line-out caught Chiltern napping. The inevitable converted try closed the gap to 10-13. Injuries began to take their toll with the industrious Andy Zair forced to leave the field with a hand injury. Two more Andy Fluker penalties took the score to a 10-19 lead at half time.
The second half was tightly contested with Chiltern conceding too many penalties although solid defence prevented CS from converting any advantage into points. After 20 minutes Sam Portland scored for Chiltern after a controlled catch and drive. 10-26 looked comfortable until CS hit back with two tries, but two more penalties to Chiltern saw them home 22-32.
Not an easy win for Chiltern against resolute opposition, but this squad has a steely determination to get across the line as they reach the business end of the season.
Excellent wins for Chiltern 2nd and 3rd teams indicate the playing strength in the club with competition for places across the board.
