A&C Under 14s vs Chesham
The last time the Under14s tried to play Chesham away, three or so years ago, the monsoon conditions led to a late cancellation. As we know after the age of 13 boys become waterproof thanks to their application of grooming products so, despite a deluge, we were off and playing. It did of course mean that parents were looking for improved wet weather gear, leading Judith Cocking to develop an interesting black bin bag number reminiscent of Siouxsie Sioux circa 1979
Chesham were able to field their customary large pack of forwards, seemingly perfect for the wet weather and the increasingly heavy ground. A&Cs performances in our opening matches of the season have been, occasionally, outstanding. But for almost all of this match A&C were consistently outstanding. The team rucked ferociously providing Chesham with little or no opportunity to develop momentum and our tackling gave little opportunity for them in open play. In attack the good work continued with great interchange and very few misplaced passes, despite the slippery ball. The team always played with a purpose, looking up for opportunities to exploit gaps. The set piece too looked solid for much of the match, despite A&C rotating their forwards and changing a number of the key partnerships
The result was a succession of excellent tries, principally from the backs with Chrissy Grint, Thomas Cocking, Seb Porter and Kofi Cripps all scoring more than two each. Mention too for our kickers Ryan Treadwell and Alfie Nelson, both of whom achieved over 75% in conversions despite the rain.
Final score, but the damp made the ink run on my notes, was I think 83 – 10. One thing I am certain of though is that the score doesn’t reflect the commitment and effort by the Chesham team from the start to the end and they should be very proud of their attitude and application. Thanks to our closest rivals and friends at Chesham for their hospitality despite the rain.
