'Friendly' U16 game Vs great local rivals (Chesham / Drifters)

Improvements a plenty

A&C were able to field a strong squad of 20 players despite missing several and were keen from the kick-off to play some expansive rugby on this warm December morning.

A&C make a bright start with some strong forward carries but unfortunately a series of knock-ons and miscommunication stopped A&C breaking through the Chesham defence. The half-backs had to deal with scrappy ball and frequently found themselves in heavy traffic and unable to get the ball away, but making good decisions not to throw away bad ball and securing ball for forwards to recycle. With Chesham back row getting up fast on A&C backs, we resorted to kicking the ball away and often we were unable to win it back from those kicks. The game settled after 10 mins or so and A&C were finally able to put phases together, one which resulted in a run by Harry Gibbs down the left wing. With A&C camped on the line George Hill broke through to touch down on the left and Ross Tobin neatly popped a difficult kick over for the extra two (7-0)

A&C then found themselves in the opposition half again with a scrum and William Curry picked up from the back, went blind and rampaged through the defence to score on the right. Missed conversion but at 12-0 beginning to look dominant.

The next try came from a flowing three phase move with Ross Tobin accelerating round the defence and touching down behind the posts and then converting his own try for 19-0

A&C's big runners continued to make inroads into the defence and with much improved distribution and handling from the 3/4 line A&C were able to score three more tries before half-time. Great to see confidence in offloads from contact and distribution which ate up the opposition defence. Tries from Freddie Moxom, William Curry and George Hill (with one more conversion from Ross T) left he half time score at 36-0.

Chesham were missing some match sharpness which A&C had plenty of, and the scoreline reflected this.

The second half opened with a few substitutions from both sides but the new line-ups soon fell into place. The coaches agreed for A&C to loan three players to Chesham to maintain a strong competitive edge and fun for all players. And as their coach said "allow the players to learn and improve". It was a useful exercise for the A&C players to sharpen up their defence and to play against their own players in patterns they anticipated.

Tries continued to come for A&C from the dominant back line, Ross Tobin again and Fergus Topham, popping up in the centres, as well as some solid conversions put the score well out of sight at 50-0

With the A&C players settling in for Chesham, they started to look more comfortable and gained some dominance challenging the A&C defence. Jack Hill, William Curry and Liam Bruno led their (new) team strongly and Chesham scored three tries and two conversions in quick order, interspersed with one more breakaway try from George Hill for A&C after he successfully stole the ball for the umpteenth time at a breakdown.

A game played in good competitive spirit, but A&C clearly too strong for their local rivals. A&C playing a good combination of forward strength and some much improved back line distribution.
