Impressive win pushes Chiltern into second

A&C 2xv travelled to Maidenhead to play second in the table. Chiltern hit the ground running and produced their best performance of the season to score 7 tries and win 52-7 to leapfrog their opponents in the table.

Playing on the outstanding 3G pitch at Maidenhead in dry conditions allowed for a quick game. It took 10 minutes for the first score, a penalty against the home team and well slotted by Dan Wood 3-0 to Chiltern.

Shortly after a fantastic catch from the restart from Luke Donnebaum setup the platform for the next phase, a clever box kick from Michael Brothers into space collected by Joe Butler to go over for his first of the afternoon. The conversion successful from Dan Wood 10-0.

The second try came from a penalty to the corner and Chiltern using their powerful catch & drive scored by Luke Donnebaum and converted by Dan Wood 17-0.

30 minutes in and Chiltern’s third try followed after good pressure chasing down a kick, Jack Davidson collected and passed wide to Joe Butler who finished very well to score his second of the afternoon, again converted by Dan Wood 24-0.

Its fair to say Chiltern caught Maidenhead by surprise and the key was to keep control of the match. Just before half time Chiltern put pressure on themselves by trying to play too much rugby in their 22 and one loose kick was caught by the powerful Maidenhead second row to crash over from 5 metres out, converted to make the half time score 23-7.

HT 24-7

The second half was all Chiltern who scored four further tries to secure a strong win.

The tone was set from a Dan Pettinger turnover on halfway, followed by a powerful Gareth Wehrle run and a fine trademark line break and finish from captain Josh Davies, converted by Dan Wood 31-7.

The next try came from a strong lineout platform, Gareth Wehrle again involved popping off to Lewis Edwards who crashed over from 10 metres out beating numerous defenders, Dan Wood successful with the boot to make the score 38-7.

The last two tries were both fantastic team tries, the first a great run from full back Ryan Greenstreet starting in his own 22 up to halfway, the ball going through five pairs of hands for Gareth Wehrle to finish in the corner, Dan Wood converting 45-7.

The final try was another team try finished well by Joe Butler to secure his hat trick, Dan Wood converting to wrap up a convincing 52-7 win.

FT 52-7

A brilliant debut from Joe Butler who scored a hat trick of tries and a special mention for man of the match Dan Wood who had a flawless day with the boot kicking 8 out of 8. A great win and a top team performance

Next week Chiltern host Oxford Harlequins at home aiming to reverse the previous result 22-0 loss earlier in the season
