So near but yet so far!!!

More changes were needed as three players were still unavailable due to concussions suffered against Brentwood and so two more players made their debuts, both on the wing, Tom Fawsett and Aidan Caldwell. On a very hot day and with the ground firm to say the least, a cagey opening from both sides saw opportunities at both ends but Chiltern having conceded a needless penalty gave Eton Manor the opportunity to engineer space enough to allow their right wing to saunter over in the corner for the first try of the game. 0-5 but the conversion was missed. Both sides continued to create openings but although the scrum was sound the Chiltern lineout was not functioning well with the regular loss of territory. Ironically from a good Manor attack a speculative kick was picked up by the outstanding George Bartlett who created space and time to slip the ball to Nat Hockins inside the Chiltern half, Nat needed no second invitation and raced away for a 50m run to score under the posts, the resulting try converted by Tom Fawsett 7-5. Both sides continued to attack at times almost frenetically but there was no more scoring before the half time whistle went.
The pattern of play after the interval was very similar but Chiltern definitely upped their game and were more patient in attack. After sustained pressure Bartlett was driven over the line to score for Chiltern which Fawsett again converted 14-7. Frankly Chiltern should have put the result to bed but regularly coughing up territory allowed Eton Manor to gain a foothold and it was no surprise when they rumbled over the line for a second try which was converted 14-12. Worse was to follow as a succession of penalties allowed Eton Manor to pound away at the Chiltern line. The boys repelled wave after wave of attacks but finally the dam broke and Manor scored their third try which was again converted 14-19 and now 10 minutes to play.
Chiltern finally woke up, kept the ball and camped in the Manor 22. This time it was the oppositions to defend for all they were worth. Chiltern persevered however and were rewarded with their 3rd try again Hockings going over 15m to the right of the posts. Regrettably the conversion slid past the post so the game finished 19-19.
Better discipline and a bit more composure would have seen Chiltern take the victory but it wasn't to be.
Next week they face a big task away at Colchester kick off 3.00pm.
