Dominant Amersham impress as Aylesbury restore respectability [
/size]

‘Too much, Too Little, Too Late to ever try again.
Too Much, Too Little, Too Late, let’s end it being friends.
Too Much, Too Little, Too Late, we knew it had to end.
Oh, it’s over’

[size=small] Johnny Mathis with Deniece Williams (1978)

Originating in the military the phrase ‘too little, too late’ was first applied to reinforcements that were insufficient in number and arrived too late to ensure victory or avoid defeat. So it was on a mild and settled, but overcast day at Weedon Lane that a decent and good natured crowd were in position to welcome Aylesbury for our second Bucks derby of the season.

Following a previous defeat at home (17 – 20) a mid-table Aylesbury would have fancied their chances of revenge. It was not to be as Chiltern started in relentless fashion with pressure, poise and undoubted panache.

And so only after 7 minutes it was again, Warwick South, picking and going off our scrum half, Conor Segre’s pass, for a try under the posts. Duly converted by our kicker for the day Tom Fawssett (7-0).

Amersham kept the pressure on and with some pluckiness and enthusiasm Aylesbury managed to respond with a decent try borne from some powerful forward play. Duly converted (7-7).

Chiltern though, then stepped up a couple of gears and it was Tom Fawssett picking up a lovely offload and running over for our 2nd try. Alas this time unconverted (12–7). Momentum rediscovered and then maintained right up to half-time. Amersham’s focus on discipline and playing rugby was impressive for all to see. Michael Everett did not then waste his opportunity prior to the half time whistle when he neatly burrowed through the last line of the Aylesbury defence for a 2nd converted try.

A well-deserved 19–7 Half-time lead.

From the restart Amersham seemed intent on keeping their foot on the throttle and on 52mins it was Doug McGregor–Smith, one of our mighty props, who with laser eyed precision took aim and ploughed over the line for another beautifully worked Chiltern try. Easily converted by Tom (26–7). The pressure kept building just in time for Captain Jack (Josh) Finch to run between some legs and sneak through to stretch the lead to (33–7) following yet another successful conversion.

Aylesbury had been previously weakened through the issuing of a yellow card and time in the cooler for a wee spat of naughtiness.

5 minutes later their Captain received his marching orders following some very dangerous play, right in front of the referee and not far from the touchline. Amazingly though following the red card Aylesbury then must have had some divine inspiration as they rose to make a game of it. On 70 minutes and then 2 minutes later and another before the final whistle Aylesbury scored three converted tries. All credit for that and a superb advert for disciplined and clean rugby.

Well done all and thank you.

Quote of the day: “My, my, my! Who would have thought a fight back like that would come after suffering a red card”; Peter Gibson Director of Rugby at A&C.
