Chiltern have too many guns for a hard working Chesham side

On another foul day and after England's earlier defeat, it was disappointing that the huge clubhouse crowd had to face such appalling weather again. The strength of the wind and driving rain made handling difficult and enabled the heavier Chesham side to maintain parity for long periods of the first half with the quicker more inventive Chiltern team. With the greasy ball and strong wind the game was not particularly fluid but after finally overcoming some desperate Chesham defence Chiltern went ahead with a simple penalty by Max Dugdale.
Chiltern continually tried to move the ball wide when frankly, closer driving play and keeping the ball in hand would have been a better option. However that said on 30 minutes their enterprise was rewarded when a lovely long pass by debutant Ross Lewis, who had an excellent first outing, gave returning centre Dan Kingsley room to scythe through the defence for a neat try converted by Dugdale 10-0.
Over ambitious play however by Chiltern gave Chesham a foothold just before half time and a nice drive by their forwards gave their centre space to scamper over so 10-7 at the break.
The second half was largely dominated by Chiltern who now had the advantage of the wind and after securing good line out ball the excellent Alfie Mawdsley carved through the defence for Chiltern's second try which went unconverted 15-7. A Chesham penalty pegged the score back to 15-10 but with Chiltern now camped in Chesham 22 quick ball enabled Dugdale, who by now had moved to 10, to side step his way over despite a high tackle and cross under the posts for another try which he also converted. Chiltern continued to press and all credit must go to a wholly committed Chesham side for keeping them at bay for such a long time. The pressure did tell and with almost his first touch of the match Lloyd Anderson with a trade mark hand off scored Chiltern's 4th and final try to make the final score 27-10.
It was a shame that the weather was so bad for this the first ever meeting of the clubs 1st XVs but despite this Chiltern's conveyer belt of talent proved just too strong for a very game and committed Chesham side.
Next week it is back to league action when Chiltern travel the short distance to play Ruislip, kick off 2.30pm.
