Oh Brother! A&C Give the Opposition the Run-Abbot at Reading Abbey!

We are now at the end of our early season run of festivals and had yet another day to remember from the Reading Abbey festival. What promised to be a chaotic day ultimately led to arguably the most enjoyable of all of our away fixtures due to the non-stop nature of the day. It felt like the Sharks and Tigers were in action constantly throughout the morning playing six games each with one run out for a hybrid Tiger Shark team!

Our young rugby stars really excelled themselves and I feel that I need to seek out some new superlatives to describe the performance. I only really got to see the Sharks perform but they were clearly the best team in their pool. The games tended to take on a rhythm of A&C scoring a well worked two or three phase try, followed by an extended period of defensive play where the opposition were continually thwarted by a well organised and totally committed group of taggers who hunted together in a pack. Cormac and Isabelle deserve special mention for elevating this aspect of play to a completely new level. There was a virtuous circle at play where good organisation and tagging led to more time defending and hence improved defensive skills. When we play in the U8 age group next year there will be a restriction on the number of tags before a turnover and I have a feeling we will be very strong in this department of the game.

Head Coach Rob has told me that the Tigers were also very strong, putting in fine offensive and defensive performances. On top of all that the parents all seemed to enjoy the day, despite the cold weather and "early start". The final analysis of each team was as follows:

Tigers: P6 W3 D2 L1
Sharks: P6 W5 D0 L1
Tiger Sharks: P1 W1 D0 L0

All in all an excellent day and very satisfying for the coaching team to see the fantastic progress the children have made over the last five weeks. We all feel very proud and hope you do too. Here is a picture of the impenetrable Shark defensive wall waiting patiently to repel all boarders!
