Chiltern travelled to Gloucester outfit Old Richians in the first round of the EDF vase. With chiltern fielding 7 players on debut, and Old Richians finishing 3rd in their league last year, it was important that chiltern started well. This they did not, giving the ball away almost straight from the kick off resulting in Old Richians moving the ball well to the opposite wing and scoring a converted try. The chiltern of last season at this point may have wilted, but this is a new team with renewed passion for the game. From the restart chiltern applied pressure resulting in a penalty just outside the opposition 22 which was duly converted. The Chiltern pack fought hard throughout and were never really on the back foot, but old richians looked dangerous whenever they moved the ball through their speedy backs, resulting in another try before half time. Each side also kicked a penalty. In the second half chiltern had more territory and possesion than their opponents but were unable to break down the resolute defence of Old Richians, who scored another converted try through their backs, and were deserved winners of the game. Chilterns 2 outings so far this season show signs of great promise, and they are certainly a rejuvenated outfit compared to last season. But with the first league fixture this saturday away at Abingdon, time is fast approaching for this young side to start to realise their potential and own expectations. |
