On Friday night, Newcastle were beaten by Leeds 16-15. Playing for Newcastle were Wilkinson, Tait, Flood and Noon who all featured for England in the recent 6 nations. If a club team with four current Internationals in their back line cannot beat the bottom side in the Premiership, there is something seriously wrong with the England selection policy. It is little wonder that England`s backs threaten noone, and even struggle to get over the gain line. They beat a poor Irish team, that was about it. I could never understand why four Newcastle threequarters were in the squad when their team languished in the bottom half of the table. If these four guys are so good, why the hell is Newcastle not top? Gloucester backs sparkle every week, (Aston picks the Volcano on the wing, he is good at running through brick walls, and that is about it and he is useless on wet ground); where was Hipkiss, Lewsey, Simpson - Daniel? I have had my moan and I am now feeling better. Bring on Martin Johnson! |

Apparently Ashton and Lewsey hate each other, so aslong as Ashton's in power it seems unlikely that Lewsey will be selected. Couldn't agree more with what you saying though Lord Chesham, get the red and white dreadlocked Volcano out, and get Simpson Daniel in! |

In fairness to the Newcastle back line. You are only as good as the platform you are given to play with and apparent from Carl Heymans-Newcastle dont have much of a pack. Also i think the arctic conditions didnt really suit the open running game that the likes of Flood and Tait are good at. I think you are being unfair to Ireland and Noone. I was at Twickenham and Jamie Noon was superb in the contact area and was smashing the likes of Jamie Heaslip who is not a poor player. I agree the Lewsey is the best full back at the moment but simpson Daniel has had his chance at international level and not really done much. The backs that you need to concern yourself with are the likes of abendonan at Bath, Anthony allen at Gloucester and Shane Gerathy at London Irish. They are the future of English Rugby, not the likes of Simpson Daniel and Lewsey. At least Ashton is giving young players a chance. At least that is something. |

It should be noted that the only reason Simpson-Daniel didn't play against Ireland instead of Vainikolo was, surprise surprise, an injury picked up in the week during training. Miles Benjamin, Danny Care and Olly Morgan back in for the summer tour. Though Ashton knows he propbably wont get fired, since it'll be Andrew who would have to make sure a decision, leaving him vulnerable to the chop when the RFU suddenly realise they pay him 400K a year to do nothing but make wild rumours and not fire under performing employees. |
