Unlucky guys, they must have put out one of their strongest sides, when we played their first team they beat us 76-0, they are pretty much destroying every university team this year!

Thank you to those who have posted positive comments about saturday's match. Spiko's comment highlights what a good side we played against - 3 fully capped internationals were in that side, let alone the age group players.

Players, you did yourselves proud and didn't let your heads drop throughout the match. As we discussed, the only negative thing was the result.

Our line-out went very well again, the defence from set-piece and broken play was well organised (there's just no stopping players with feet and gas like that, especially when they have support) and as I said at the time, we should take confidence from the try we scored. They did not slack off and you could hear them continuously saying 'no scores'.

Those who view saturday's performance negatively need to consider that Hartpury College are the best university side in the country by a long way, they field internationals (both full and at age group), they play together twice a week, they train every morning at 8am (on the pitch) and do a gym session a day, and a lot of them are on the books at Premiership and National League Sides.

Now I know I am not the oldest but I have played a bit of senior rugby in my time and that was by far the best drilled team I have ever played against! There is also no substitute for pace! They stuggled to get through the middle of us to start with but once they realised we lacked blistering pace out wide they worked the ball very well! At one point I have to admit I was thinking 150+ but the whole team stuck at it, remember at one point we had a flanker with disentary in the centres! As stupid as it sounds I enjoyed sat, I wouldn't want them to play us every week but they did give us a nice lesson on how to not die with the ball and recycle possesion and going with the flow all things we have been putting into practise ourselves, I am already looking forward to Sat!!

Being the oldest on the pitch by a good few years - they ceratinly were well organised - I thought we scrummaged well and having never used the new method of lineouts I was impressed by how well orgainsed we were.

From my perspective I have 2 key learnings -

1.) We need to learn from our mistakes as we play the game - after kicking ball to them about 5 times and seeing them scoring we really must learn quicker.

2.) Assess their weakness and attack it - even if we have not planned to attack in that way. And yes they did have a weakness......

To be honest boys, Hatpury were good value for the win, and to be honest the pace and fitness was just another level.....there is NO team that we will play against, that could play/cope with them....

So I think this leaves us here:

- Good rugby lesson - Quick ball, solid passing, belief in each others ability and STRAIGHT lines of runnning
- Solid defense - Don't remember them missing a tackle (but i'm sure i'm wrong)
- Team play - These boys train together all the time so get to know each other very quickly....we need to train together and then we'll be in a possition to know each others games and the results will come.

So when it's p#$sing it down on a Tueasday/Thursday, just think that one team on saturday scored 95 points and the other 7....I know that I'd want to train after that!

As reluctant as I am to agree with the like of Ginge, Yogi and Nic, here I go - we must:

- make use of the time we have to train together i.e turning up
- learn from our mistakes during a match
- generate quicker ball to impose our style
- keep our heads up because we are improving week after week

Let's get fired up about saturday and train this week - especially on thursday, then hand it out to Witney on sat!

hAVE TO AGREE with Ginge, lineouts and scrums were good.We should have kicked the ball off the park and made them work for the ball at lineouts. Then when we got it stuffed it up the jumper a bit more and used our size. The tackling i thought was woefull i dont think i have ever seen so many hand offs in a game at the club hence it was easy for them to keep the ball alive and move it around.
yes they had a couple of good players but worth 95 points i dont think so...

Andy - you are spot on - if we had attachked round the edges of rucks and mauls and they used foster up the middle we would have caused problems. but that requires a big, fit pack who can hold on to the ball.

For the record:

One of my coaches spoke to the Hartpury College coach on sunday and without knowing his link to our club...

He said that he was impressed by our side, considering our youth, that we stuck at it very well and that we did not miss tackles.

Can I take that when he referred to youth in the side that he included me in that! Dance
