Aylesbury 5 Chiltern 12
A gritty performance from a Chiltern team who showed tremendous team spirit and dogged determination to overcome Aylesbury in a relegation battle. The win gives Chiltern a fighting chance to avoid relegation as it brings them level with Aylesbury and 2 points ahead of Newbury.
Played in difficult conditions with a strong swirling wind Chiltern’s forward battled for 80 minutes to great effect. They dominated in the scrums, won most of their own lineout and pinched a number of Aylesbury’s throw-ins. An early long range penalty attempt by captain and fly half Dan Kinsey hit the crossbar and Aylesbury struggled to clear their line. Shortly after a break by centre Neil Foster almost resulted in a try with a tackle stopping him just short. Aylesbury went offside in trying to clear the ball and Kinsey converted the penalty to give Chiltern a 3-0 lead.
Shortly after this Foster was put in the sin bin for a high tackle increasing the pressure on the Chiltern defence.
Chiltern opted to keep 8 players in the forwards and Chris Luker had to do the work of 2 centres. He was more than up to it. The only occasion when Aylesbury looked like scoring in the 1st half was when they created an overlap but Tom Fletcher at full back was able to pressure the centre into giving a poor pass to the winger and the ball was knocked on. Chiltern immediately went down the other end, won a penalty for offside which Kinsey kicked for a 6-0 half time lead.
The second half gave Chiltern what advantage there was from the wind and they used it to continually peg Aylesbury back in their own half. They were close to scoring a try on a number of occasions, the first when only a desperate tap tackle prevented Luker from scoring. This was followed by a period of driving play by the Chiltern pack with No. 8 James Green being stopped inches short but Aylesbury had strayed offside and Kinsey kicked another penalty to increase the lead to 9-0. More pressure resulted from the restart and Chiltern won another penalty to stretch the lead to 12-0 when Kinsey kicked the goal.
Aylesbury came more into the game and began gaining ground when their 2 big 2nd row players used their size to make hard yards. Chiltern defended well but began to concede penalties which gave the impetuous to the Aylesbury forwards. With 5 minutes remaining the referee awarded another penalty to Aylesbury and sent hooker Julian Alexander to the sin bin. With one player down Chiltern’s defence was finally breached to give Aylesbury a try and a final score of 12-5.
Team: Matt Allen, Julian Alexander, Neil Buchanan, Dan Pettinger(sub: Gareth Bourne), Colm Gilhooly, Dave Robertson, Chris Morris, James Green, John Naylor, Dan Kinsey, Liam Gilhooly, Neal Foster, Chris Luker, Charlie Griffiths, Tom Fletcher. Subs not used Alan Simmons, Petrus Schrauwers (Yogi)

Chiltern 8 Milton Keynes 14
On a chilly day at Weedon Lane Chiltern welcomed Milton Keynes looking to turn around the result from a few weeks previous, where even Milton Keynes expressed their amazement at some of the refereeing decisions! But that was in the past.
So MK kicked of and put Chiltern under immediate pressure, the malaise that was evident in the Chiltern warm up seemed to be carried into the game, after about 15 mins Chiltern kicked the ball straight to MKs winger who countered passed to there other winger who chipped ahead and an awkward bounce defeated Pagey on the wing and their winger gathered and jotted down, the conversion was successful 0-7. The half continued with MK applying pressure and Chiltern making mistakes in attack although tackling well. Chiltern held out till about 5 mins before the interval when the MK fly half found some space on the wing, and dummied the full back (Yogi not Dan) and put the ball down in the corner the MK kicker converted well 0-14. Chiltern clung on till the break and in the last move of the half managed to show what they were capable of with a flowing move just being forced into touch in the MK 22.
Half time Chiltern 0 Milton Keynes 14
Buoyed by the way they ended the half and the roasting from the coaches at half time, Chiltern were a different side after the break, and things started to come together, Gareth Ellis went on a storming run through the heart of the MK defence unfortunately this resulted in him twisting his ankle and he was replace by the equally impressive Colm in the second row, Chiltern were now starting to string moves together but were let down by some rather panicky decisions from all players on the final pass/kick, midway through the half Chiltern did manage get it right and one of the centres went across the white wash (I think it was Shaun but not 100%) the conversion was missed 5-14. Chiltern were now playing all the rugby and MK were putting up a very impressive defensive performance although they did infringe once and Dan slotted the resulting penalty 8 –14. Some additional good defence kept Pagey of the score board when he was held up in the corner for what would have been his first 1XV try, Chiltern were now using the pick and goes and finding some space in behind, giving Nic and the backs good quick ball to work from, although the propensity of our backs to kick good counter attack ball returned and a couple of chances went begging, the result could still have gone either way and right into the final minutes Chiltern were hammering at the door, but alas could not find a way through and the game ended 8-14.
A great game in the end (once we had woken up) and we left ourselves just a little too much to do. Mention must go to Nic Rastelli for a Man of the match performance although he left a little to be desired in the post match boat race! Maybe a half pint next time! It was also good to see a large number of the players treading the tiles in Amersham that night. Next game Olney away on the 5th January Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy new year.

Slough 5 - Amersham & Chiltern 6
Off the Bottom at last!
A tight game against opposition who are also at the wrong end of the table resulted in a win for Chiltern which was vital in their quest to avoid relegation and maintain their place in Southern Counties (North). Chiltern made hard work of a game in which they should have emerged with a much more favourable score line.
There was only 1 score in the 1st half, a penalty by full back and captain Dan Kinsey which gave Chiltern a 3-0 lead. However the score line did not reflect the play in which Chiltern had a try disallowed for an apparent knock-on and wasted 2 easy scoring opportunities by not passing to the man when overlaps had been created.
Chiltern also suffered, as did Slough, from a referee who seemed to take great delight in penalizing players if they opened their mouths. Chiltern in the 1st half incurred the wrath of the referee on a number of occasions, including once when they were on Slough’s try line.
The 2nd half was very much like the 1st with Chiltern attacking with verve and breaking through the home defence on a number of occasions but spurning the opportunities to use the overlaps and wasting at least 3 good try scoring chances. All they had to show for their efforts was a further penalty by Kinsey to give them a 6-0 lead. They continued to fail to understand that the referee was penalizing ‘verbals’ like a guest at a wedding with too much confetti and they even managed to annoy him when he had given them a very kickable penalty. Slough then responded with their best period of play and began to use the wind to their advantage and drive Chiltern back into their own 22. They were rewarded for their efforts with a try by their scrum half but fortunately for Chiltern the conversion was missed and they defended well for the rest of the game to earn a well deserved victory 6-5.
For the future Chiltern must start taking the chances their fine back play is creating and learn that the referee is always right (particularly when he is wrong)

Amersham & Chiltern 0 - 29 Wallingford
Another bad day at the office for the 1st XV.
In dreadful conditions they found the Wallingford team just too strong though they did show a lot of commitment and urgency in their play. In the 1st half they more than held their own and the 2 tries they conceded were due to dropping their concentation and poor defending meant the half time score was 10-0. As this was against a stong wind it did not seem too bad, however the wind swung and became across the pitch after half time and Chiltern did not have the advantage they hoped for.
The 2nd period proved to be difficult as Wallingford had sussed Chiltern were only playing with one jumper in the line-out and began to double mark Colm Gilhooly who despite valiant a effort began to struggle to win any good ball. This meant Wallingford began to kick into the corners knowing there was every chance of winning or at least disrupting the Chiltern throw. Thes tactics meant they were camped in Chiltern's 22 for long periods and although Chiltern defended stoutly they did concede 3 furter tries, 2 of which were converted to give a final score of 29-0.
A special mention should be given to the Chiltern front row for their valiant effort. Young Charlie Wilton, straight from the Colts improves every game, Dan Pettinger who normally plays 2nd row and Lloyd Powell who though not 100% fit answered the Club's call. Well done to them and to the whole team who never stopped trying.

Chiltern 14 - 39 Grove
Chiltern’s poor start to the season continued with a heavy loss to Grove. There was more encouragement than in previous games but loss of concentration at the beginning of the second half and poor tackling during the middle of the second half contributed significantly to the final score. The game started brightly for Chiltern and they disrupted the Grove lineout, pressurized them in the loose and created opportunities to score. Unfortunately they were unable to convert these opportunities into points and this is an area of play in which they have to improve if the are to secure wins. Grove showed how to take advantage of the chances they had and they turned around at half time with an 8-0 lead.
The second half began badly for Chiltern conceding 2 soft tries by sloppy play allowing Grove to increase their lead to 20-0. Chiltern continued to play with passion but too often were guilty of allowing themselves to be isolated and conceding turnover ball. They did however manage a try by No. 8 Yogi Schrauwers which full back and captain Dan Kinsey converted. However this led to Chiltern’s crazy 10 minutes when they stood back and stopped tackling and in the process leaked 3 tries allowing Grove to stretch their lead to 39-7.
To their credit Chiltern proved they have commitment and fitness by dominating the last 15 minutes of the match, taking the game to Grove and putting them under pressure. However their only reward was a try by second row Gareth Ellis again converted by Kinsey to give a final score of 39-14.
Sobering result for Chiltern but if they can continue to improve game by game victories will come their way.
