It is with great sadness that we hear the news that Richard Stuart-Price has died.

Dickie was the longest living First XV Captain (Brian Arbib played for him as a 17 year old!) and was a key figure in the rebuilding of the club after the 1959 fire. He came to the President’s Luncheon every year and the following biography is from the President’s Luncheon in 2012 when he was Guest of Honour:

Richard G. Stuart-Prince
(Chiltern RFC 1948-54 & 1956-2014)

In the 1948/49 season, Chiltern RFC welcomed a new player Richard G. Stuart-Prince who had moved with his parents to Hyde Heath. Dickie was educated at St Edward’s (Teddies) Oxford, and Corpus Christi, Cambridge University, where he studied natural science in between any sporting pastime that took his fancy - including playing for the college at rugby in the position of wing forward.

Dickie played his first game for Chiltern RFC against Hendon in October 1948, losing 6-12. The following season 1949/50, Dickie was appointed First XV captain, a position he held until the 1953/54 season when he went to work in the USA. He returned as captain in the 1955/56 season but retired in the same season following a broken leg.

Dickie worked as a patents officer in Euston Road and lived near Oxford Circus during the week. He was a fitness fanatic and trained daily in Regents Park - a discipline he installed into the First XV. Midweek, Dickie arranged training sessions for the London-based Chiltern players, starting at his flat and running into Regents Park. Local Chiltern players trained under the watchful eye of another First XV player W.Rigby, a physical training master at Dr Challoner’s Grammar School.

Buckinghamshire County Rugby Union was formed in July 1949, of which Chiltern RFC’s Arthur ‘Griff’ Griffiths and Pat Mason were founder members. The selectors soon noted Dickie’s leadership qualities and he was appointed County Captain, supported by five other Chiltern players: Trevor Davey and Mickie Laing at half-backs; Colin Morcom hooker; Brian Tanner loose head prop and Robin Anderson on the right wing.
